A Brief History of the Jean
Originally worn by cowboys, and workers such as miners, jeans were quickly adopted by movie stars and rock and roll icons. Over the years high-fashion and pop culture turned this functional garment into both a statement piece of clothing and an everyday staple.
Jeans were first invented in the 1800s, with the word referring to a twill cotton cloth that was used for trousers. Soon the word referred to the item of clothing it was commonly used for. Blue jeans were made from this material, and were being manufactured in the town of Nîmes (bleu de Nîmes) in France. It is still unclear whether "denim" was used as an anglicized version of the name of the town, or if an existing English product adopted the name to add prestige.
Either way, by the 20th Century, we were all calling cotton and especially denim informal trousers "jeans". We were also largely connecting jeans to America, thanks to Levi's.
Levi's were first patented in 1873 by tailor Jacob Davis and his business partner Levi Strauss, who owned a wholesale fabric house in San Francisco. They were dark indigo-dyed denim offering pockets and sturdy riveting, making them ideal workwear. Levi's were also manufactured in 'brown duck', but the invention of the 501 style in 1890 made the blue denim incredibly popular.
The quality of Levi's was already appreciated by workers, as the copper rivets stopped their pockets from ripping so often. However, Levi's initial patent ran out in 1890, opening the market to other brands. Notable jeans brands included Blue Bell, who entered the jeans market in 1904 and would later become Wrangler.
Both male and female Hollywood stars of the 1920s and 1930s, such as Gary Cooper and Ginger Rogers began to be pictured wearing jeans, adding to their popularity. The 1950s took this association to another level with jeans being linked to the rebellious personas of stars such as James Dean and Marlon Brando.
In the 1960s, some schools in America banned jeans, adding to their popularity, at the same time as rock stars made them their unofficial uniform. From the 1970s onwards, jeans began to change into high-fashion pieces, with brands such as Ralph Lauren, Guess, Versace and Dior eventually creating their own jeans and other denim-inspired pieces.
Over the last few years, music artists such as Kanye West and Justin Bieber have increasingly become synonymous with streetwear pants, including jeans.
