Crafted by RepresentDeveloped Over Time:
Bags have been on the REPRESENT must do list for years. The reason it has taken until now is that it needed to be done to the highest standard.
Menswear has been moving towards leather goods and formal bags for a while, and the easy version of this would have been ten shapes at once, straight into a trend. That is not what happened.
"If we're going into a new category, we want to build it properly," - Toni Purdie, head of Mainline design at REPRESENT.
Two bags developed for FW26, both made in London, both in real leather:
Hudson Tote
Premium large-scale tote in distressed brown leather. Debossed branding, detachable crossbody strap, protective base rivets, blind debossed keychain and internal zip pockets. D-rings for wallet chains and carabiners.
Weekend Bag
Premium oversized weekend bag in super soft tumbled leather. Debossed branding, discreet top-edge pocket and internal zip compartments. D-rings for wallet chains and carabiners.
Scaling Up:
Larger proportions, scaled to feel masculine, new attitudes to a traditionally formal bag.
"Larger proportions are obviously relevant right now, but there was also something about the scale that immediately made it feel more masculine and more REPRESENT," says Purdie.
This development takes what could traditionally feel like quite a formal handbag and gives it a completely different attitude.
To help connect and achieve this, expert designers and leather crafters were brought in along side the mainline team at REPRESENT.
"That helped us connect those two worlds. The construction, material and consideration you expect from luxury bags, but with the attitude and accessibility of REPRESENT."
Less Noise, Built To Be Loaded:
Compared with previous seasons the handwriting has been stripped right back. Less branding, fewer details fighting each other, better materials.
That is why the branding is debossed rather than stamped across the front, and why neither bag is carrying a season on it. Bought now, still right in three years
"We wanted these to feel timeless rather than something tied to one collection. The leather and proportion should be doing most of the talking."
Hardware is Michael Heaton's territory, and it mattered that these could plug back into the wider REPRESENT world rather than sit apart from it. So there are D-rings built into both bags, put there specifically for our wallet chains and Rep carabiners.
"You can start with this really clean leather bag and then stack hardware onto it, embellish it and make it feel completely different," says Purdie.
